LEARNING SECOND LANGUAGE AT SCHOOL AND AT HOME

Hello guys... Welcome back to my blog, I hope you all in good healthy and happy...
In this blog I want to tell about "Learning Second Language at Home and School"

Previously I have discussed about  "Learning First Language at Home and School" on the previous blog. If you want to read it I put a link. (https://teylaviliana.blogspot.com/2020/10/learning-first-language-at-home-and-at.html

Language is the method of expressing ideas and emotions in the form of signs and symbols. These signs and symbols are used to encode and decode the information. There are many languages spoken in the world. The first language learned by a baby is his or her mother tongue. It is  the language,  which  he or she  listens to  from  his or  her birth.  Any other language  learned  or  acquired  is  known  as  the  second  language.  Second  language acquisition, or SLA, has two meanings. In a general sense it is a term to describe learning a second language. More specifically, it is the name of the theory of the process by which we acquire - or pick up - a second language.

Teaching a second language can be in the form of a national language or a foreign language after the first language is accepted by the learners. In teaching foreign languages, students must learn different language structures in each country. If the structure of the first language is similar to the second language, it will be easier for these students to digest it, therefore the greater the difference in language structure between the first and second languages, the greater the effort the students must have. In learning foreign languages, there is a need for efforts by teachers to support teaching and learning in order to achieve learning objectives. As stated by Iskandarwassid & Sunendar (2010, p. 89) “teaching a second language can raise sociolinguistic questions. This problem might not be too heavy if it happens that the second language being studied is still classified as an allied language but it will be a big problem if the second language is not related to the first language. "

Through the learning process, students receive patterned learning through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. According to Iskandarwassid and Senendar (2011: 242) the speaking teaching program must be able to provide opportunities for each individual to achieve the desired goals. The goals of speaking skills will include the achievement of the following:

    a) Ease of speaking

    b) Clarity

    c) Responsible

    d) Forming critical listening

    e) Forming habits

Students are trained in speaking activities, including:

    • Role playing

    • Sharing forms of discussion

    • Interviews

    • Telling stories (personal experiences: life experiences, reading experiences)

     • Speeches

    • Oral reports

    • Reading aloud

    • Recording talking

    • Playing dramas

Second language learning experts generally believe that the first language (mother tongue) has an influence on the learner's second language acquisition process (Ellis, 1986) which can help in the second language learning process. However, learning a second language will be easy if the learner has mastered his first language well because this first language ability can be useful for the second language learning process.
